Missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370

A fake video purporting to show the wreckage of missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, asks users to “like” the content. The headline of the video suggests that the missing airliner has been spotted near the Bermuda triangle. The video supposedly shows pictures of the location and survivors.

Many people have been intrigued by the claims and clicked on the video, only to be forwarded to fraudulent news websites. Users are requested to click the “like” button before being shown the content.

Here is where the Facebook fraud deceives users. When the “like” link is activated, users’ personal data is captured and sold on for a profit.

In actual fact, the images displayed are of older plane accidents, such as the Bali plane crash from spring last year.

Old fraud, new tricks

This fraud action is not new. Such fake videos appear regularly when there is a disaster. The fraudsters are counting on peoples’ curiosity to get the better of them, enticing them to click on the relevant link and divulge their personal data. Here the fraudsters chose to exploit internet users‘ tendency to „like“ videos and other content.
